UMKC ACM Newsletter 2008-04-13

please read now or later, only the information in the 'Upcoming Events' section is time sensitive

This is an attempt to get people up-to-date on ACM business. I will try to do it regularly, though there may not be enough content for a newsletter even every month. The newsletter will be done on the wiki website and copied to the list. If anyone is interested in taking over this duty, and possibly expanding the scope of it, I will be more than happy to do this.

Spring 2008 Semester

So far we have successfully held a book sale, a video game day, a Linux installfest, prepared for and participated in a programming competition and we even had a meeting or two. We have one more presentation planned for this semester, by a Cerner employee on data warehousing (more info in Upcoming Events).

Summer 2008 Semester

There are no plans for any physical activities during this period. I do however, encourage everyone to keep in tune with the list as the ACM board may be soliciting input for plans that we will be making for the upcoming Fall semester.

Fall 2008 Semester

Please expect a general meeting within the first two weeks of the Fall semester where we will go over ACM business and elect a new board.

If there are any topics or activities that you would like to see address, please communicate that to us. We will do our best to accommodate that request. There are a few things we can definitely look forward to:

  • ACM Programming Competition
  • Board Elections
  • Video Game day I would like to increase that list greatly before the semester begins, so please let me know what you would like to see on there. We have pizza funds that can't wait to be converted to pizza.

The Website

Some of you may have noticed that the our website is no longer at http://studo.umkc.edu/acm/. Everything has been upgraded and we are now self sufficient, hosting our own website with associated services at http://umkcacm.org. Some of the services provided (in no particular order):

  • job search (beta)
  • wiki -- with tutorials, personal pages, etc
  • Subversion -- source code version control

  • Trac -- wiki, source browsing, ticketing and other project management

I invite you all to take a look at the job search, still very much being tested, at http://umkcacm.org/jobs/. If you find any bugs in it, please let me know. If you are interested in the details/tech behind it, feel free to start a thread in the mailing list and I will answer what questions you may have.

The main idea behind the website is to provide useful services to our members, if there are additional helpful services you think the website could provide, please let me know.

We are also interested in hosting tutorials relevant to members or computing related papers.
